This is the official web site of State Mental Health Authority-Tamil Nadu. Here you find information about mental health issues, as well as information to reducethe burden of mental illness and behavioural disorders of persons, their families and care takers. State Mental Health Authority Tamil Nadu is mandated to regulate, develop and co-ordinate Mental Health Services under the Government of Tamilnadu and on all matters which, under Mental Health Act are the concern of the State Government.

The State Mental Health Authority Tamil Nadu (SMHA-TN) was formed in 1994 as a statutory body under section 4 of the Mental Health Act, 1987.It is functioning under the superintendence, direction and control of the Government of Tamil Nadu. Under the direction of the Government of India, an Office has been established in the campus of Institute of Mental Health, Kilpauk, Chennai-600 010.

This website is an effort to highlight some of the mental health related activities in the state. It will provide access to information on licensing process, Mental Health related legislation, Facts about mental health mental health facilities, etc in the state. Application forms required for licensing of Psychiatric hospitals, forms required under Mental Health Act, etc can be accessed from the website.
