??????????? The cardiomyopathies are diseases that involve the myocardium (Heart muscle) directly. There are three types of cardiomyopathy.

?

  1. Dilated Cardiomyopathy: In this condition there is impaired ventricular contraction leading to heart failure. Dilated cardiomyopathy may be the late sequel of variety of toxins, metabolic or infectious agents, prognosis is generally poor and cardiac transplantation may be indicated.

?

  1. Restrictive Cardiomyopathy: In this condition ventricles become stiff and ventricular filling is impaired. Treatment is usually symptomatic but excision of fibrotic endocardium may be benefit.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: This is a familial condition characterized by inappropriate ventricular hypertrophy. Heart failure may develop because the stiff non-compliant ventricles impede diastolic filling. There may be left ventricular out flow tract obstruction. Treatment is by b blocker, anti arrhythmic drugs, and surgery in selected patients.
