Indian systems of Medicine had reached a high level of perfection and excellence in ancient India.? Not the great curative value of the decoctions and juices of medicinal Plants and herbs is again being recognized and appreciated by the people belonging to different parts of the world.? The Government of Tamil Nadu has taken a number of initiatives in the past to encourage the ISM with a special emphasis on the siddha systems of medicine which is indigenous to Tamil Nadu and is considered to be an integral part of Tamil Culture.? The Directorate of Indian System of medicine was et up in 1970.

Teaching in UG and PG course, and (b) Providing health care in District, Taluk and Non-taluk and Primary Health Centre level in Siddha, Ayurveda, Unani, Homoeopathy, Naturopathy & Yoga (c). Research, (d).? Production, Standatdization and quality control of drugs and (e). Production Standardization and quality control of herbs.

Old age Pension of Rs.500/- per mensem is being sanctioned to the Hereditary Siddha Medical Practitioners who have attained the age of 60 years and if their annual income is less than Rs.6000/-.? About 840 persons have been benefited under this scheme and an amount of Rs.50.40 Lakhs has been allotted for the purpose during 2003-2004.

District Siddha Medical Office has been set up to streamline the administration at District level and to provide technical guidance to the Assistant Medical Officers working in Siddha, Ayurveda, Unani and Homoeopathy Wings attached to the District Head Quarters Hospital, Taluk Hospitals, Non-Taluk Hospitals, Primary Health Centres, Government Siddha Dispensaries and Mobile dispensaries etc., in the State.? These District Officers are functioning in 22 district Headed by a District Siddha Medical Officer in each district.

??????????? The Government have sanctioned the starting of Post Graduate course in Maruthuvam and Gunapadam with an annual intake of 10 students in each branch during 1997-1998.? The students for this courses have been admitted from the academic year 1998-99 onwards.? ??????????? The Government Homoeopathy Medical College had been started at madras in 1975 and subsequently it was transferred to Thirumangalam.? Five and half years duration of BHMS Degree course including one year internship is offered at Government Homoeopathy Medical college, Thirumangalam from 1985-86 with an annual intake of 50 students.? 20 acres of land in Maravankulam Village near Thirumangalam in Madurai District has been assigned by Government for the purpose of construction of buildings for this College and Hospital in August96.

The number of seats have been increased from 16 to 26 from the academic year 1998-99.? the college continues to function in the campus of Arignar Anna Government Hospital of Indian Medicine, Chennai.? Its total strength is 126 (Boys 58 and Girls 68).? The number of candidates passed out of the College ason 1.1.2003 is 229.

Government Siddha Dispensaries and Mobile Medical Unit under Tribal Sub-Plan

??????????? The Government opened 7 Siddha Dispensaries in Hill area and one Mobile Medical Unit at Powerkadu in Kolli Hills of Salem District under Tribal Sub-Plan.? All these Dispensaries and Mobile Medical Unit are functioning.

??????????? The Government have sanctioned wings under ISM in 2 taluk hospitals and 37 Bob-Taluk Hospitals and 50 Primary Health Centres during the year 2002-2003.? The places of the 50 Primary Health Centre are being selected.? This will be opened shortly.

??????????? This pharmacy is preparing and supplying all required medicine in Siddha to cater to the needs of patients at Government Siddha Medical College Hospital, Palayamkottai.

??????????? This Pharmacy has also supplying 2 items of medicines to the Siddha Hospitals / Wings in the following 5 District i.e. (1) Tirunelveli, (2) Virudhunagar, (3) Thoothukudi, (4) Kanyakumari, (5) Ramanathapuram.

??????????? In order to, to improve the quality of drugs medicine under Indian Systems of Medicine, the State Government have decided to establish the Drug Testing Laboratory at Chennai.? The Government of India have sanctioned the Grant-in-aid amount of Rs.85 Lakhs to strengthen the State Drug Testing Laboratory, out of which a sum of Rs.50 Lakhs has been released as 1st instalment for construction of building and purchase of the equipments during the year 2001-2002 and the purchase of the equipments and construction of the building was completed during 2002-2003.

The Governmne thave constituted Medicinal Plants Board to address the issue connected with conservation and sustainable use of medicinal plants, cultivation of Medical Plant and Export of such product.? The Government of India, has released an amount of Rs.10.00 Lakhs for this purpose as the Grants Aids.

The Government have accepted to sanction in principal the clearance for establishing a World Class Hospital at the camps of Arignar Anna Government Hospital of Indian Medicine approximately in five acres of land and also constituted a steering Committee to give final shape to the proposal.

Research for treatment of Cancer and AIDS? under Siddha System of Medicine

??????????? An Ethical and Scientific Committee consisting of Siddha and Allopathy experts has been constituted to undertake Research work in prevention of AIDS and treatment of HIV positive cases.? The clinical Research on AIDS/HIV patients at Government Hospital of Thoracic Medicine, Tambaram, Chennai through Siddha System of Medicine is being conducted.? The research so far undertaken in the treatment of AIDS cases with the Siddha system of Medicine provides encouraging results.

To test the medicine prepared by the Hereditary Siddha medical Practitioners and to treat the patients suffering from cancer and AIDS, a Research wing in cancer and AIDS in Siddha system of medicine has been started both at Government Siddha medical College, Palayamkottai and Arignar Anna Government Hospital of Indian Medicine, Chennai.? The research work is progress.

The Government have formed a Research Group on AIDS under Indian System of Medicine with 8 member under the Chairmanship of the Secretary to Government, Health and Family Welfare Department for promoting the collaboration and participative research on the prevention and control of AIDS in association with the practitioners of Indian System of medicine and Allopathy.
