? Introduction:

Tamil Nadu State Blindness Control Society is functioning under the Chairmanship of Health Secretary to Government of Tamil Nadu with a Project Director and Deputy Director for the implementation of World Bank Assisted Cataract Blindness Control Project till 30.6.2002 and subsequently under National Programme for Control of Blindness from 1.7.2002.? It monitors the activities of District Blindness Control Societies (DBCS) functioning in all Districts under the Chairmanship of District Collectors.

The main activity of DBCS is to achieve the target fixed by Government of India for free cataract surgery with IOL implantation by the active involvement of NGOs and Government sector. The other activities are School Eye Screening, IEC, Eye donation campaign etc.

Manpower training:

Fourteen Ophthalmic Surgeons from Government Hospitals were trained in Modern techniques of Cataract Operation with Intra-ocular lens implantation at Regional Institute of Ophthalmology & Government Ophthalmic Hospital, Chennai.
