DANIDA ASSISTED TAMILNADU HEALTH CARE PROJECT

The DANIDA Tamilnadu Area Health Care project is a Centrally Sponsored Externally Aided Project.? The Phase? III, currently in progress since 1996 covers the Districts of? Dharmapuri, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur for most of the activities, extends some of the activities to the old Project Districts of Salem, Namakkal, Cuddalore and Villupuram? in addition? to support of some State level activities like training, drug supply logistics etc. at a total outlay of Rs. 59.10 crores. Based on the recommendation of the mid term review, the project outlay was revised to Rs. 70.76 crores.

Construction activities

?Out of 368 community supported Health Sub-Centres sanctioned for construction in the? new Project Districts,? 352 have? been completed and functioning.? All the planned 113 Primary Health Centres have been renovated.? Infrastructural facilities has been strengthened? in? 5 Auxiliary Nurse Midwives training schools and? 18 Regional Training Centres.?

Improving health awareness through street plays has been carried out in Dharmapuri and Thiruvarur districts.

Registers and records for health sub centres have been simplified.? To improve the Health Management Information System, computers have been provided to Block Primary Health Centres? of Salem? and? Namakkal districts.

The Government of India / Royal Danish Embassy have extended the Project period? till
December 2003.
