MEDICAL INSTITUTIONS

??????????? At present 11 Medical Colleges, 1 Dental College, 2 Physiotherapy colleges and 1 Nursing College are run by Government.? The total bed strength in the 43 hospitals under this Directorate is 21,238.??? The daily average inpatient and outpatient strength are 20344 and 68054 respectively.

Selection Process
?
??????????? Selection to MBBS / Bachelor of Dental Surgery / Bachelor of? Science (Nursing) / Bachelor of Physiotherapy / Bachelor of Occupational Therapy / Bachelor of Pharmacy courses is done under single window system by a Selection Committee under the chairmanship of the Director of Medical Education in accordance with the policy of Government announced every year.? Admission to post graduate courses, diploma, degree, MDS and Higher Specialities courses are done by the Selection Committee through a common entrance examination followed by counselling, adopting the rule of reservation.? Admission to Diploma Course in Nursing is also done by the Selection Committee on Merit basis (+2 marks) followed by counselling, adopting the rule of reservation.

NEW MEDICAL COLLEGES AND UPGRADATION? TO EXISTING COLLEGES
????? ????? ?The Government has decided to start a new Medical College and a College of Nursing? at Theni District.??? The land at Shanmugasundarapuram village at Andipatti Taluk has been selected.? Construction of buildings at a cost of Rs.12 crores with financial assistance from HUDCO is under way.

??????????? Financial assistance of Rs.10 crores has also been availed for construction of the hospital buildings for the proposed new Medical Colleges at Vellore and Kanniyakumari.? Upgradation of infrastructure to reach Medical Council of India norms has? been taken up in 5 Medical Colleges, at a total cost of Rs.10.01 crores in the first phase.

MENTAL HEALTH? CARE
?
??????????? An Institute of Mental Health with 1800 beds is functioning at Chennai . On an average 1650 inpatients and 450?? out-patients are taking treatment at this Institute per day.?? Construction of administrative block to this Institute at a total cost of Rs.1.05 crores is under progress.? Besides this, the psychiatry department is functioning in each of the Government Medical College Hospital with in patient and out patient services.? This apart,? de-addiction centres are functioning in? 8 Medical College Hospitals.?

The Director of Institute of Mental Health is the licensing authority empowered to grant licence for private psychiatric hospitals and Nursing homes under the Mental Health Act.??? So far 35 private psychiatric hospitals have been issued with such licences.

KING INSTITUTE OF PREVENTIVE MEDICINE

??????????? The King Institute of Preventive Medicine, Guindy is one of the premier Institutions of this country.? This Institute is manufacturing vaccines and serum.?? It is also a teaching and research centre.?? The Virology Department of this Institute is recognized by Government of India and World Health Organisation as the National Polio Laboratory for South East Asia Region of the World Health Organisation.?

TAMIL NADU DR.M.G.R. MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

??????????? The Tamil Nadu? Dr.M.G.R.? Medical University was established in July 1988, to promote academic excellence, to provide for research and advancement of knowledge in the field of Medical and Paramedical Education.? At present 207 Institutions are affiliated to this University.

(a)Regional Medical Library

??????? ??? Libraries of all? the affiliated Institutions will be connected with the Digital library of this University.? Internet services have been established through a 64 K.B.leased line from VSNL at a cost of Rs. 22.00 lakhs.? This library will have the facility of E-Mail reference service of books and journals for use of its members.

(b) Department of Transfusion Medicine

?? ???????? This department is concerned with collection, testing, storage, processing and transfusion of blood and also supplies blood products like packed cells, fresh frozen plasma, platelet concentrate, Cryoprecipitate etc., round-the-clock.

(c) Department of Curriculum Development

????????? The aim of this Department is to develop a need - based curricula for medical and para medical courses and introduce innovations in Medical and Para Medical Education. Efforts have been initiated to obtain satellite connectivity with assistance from ISRO. and extend tele medical education to other Medical educational institutions.

(d) Department of Genetics
?
????????? This Department is? in the process of establishing a cytogenetic laboratory which will be a reference centre for carrying out cytogenetic analysis in genetic disorders.

(e) Department of Epidemiology
?
This department has made significant progress in its twin objectives i.e. Research and Teaching in the thrust areas of Tuberculosis, Malaria, Anemia and Child Survival.??? Research work is field oriented as well as hospital based.? The department is identifying and addressing priority problems in health, relevant to Tamil Nadu in order to develop appropriate curriculum for medical education.? Nandhivaram and Maduramangalam are identified as? field unit resource centres for the project.??
