REPRODUCTIVE AND CHILD HEALTH PROJECT

??????????? The Reproductive and Child Health Project is being implemented for a period of 5 years in Tamil Nadu from 1997-1998 under two components:

  1. A sub-project component covering Madurai and Theni districts with a financial outlay of Rs.23.14 crores.

?

  1. State level component to strengthen the infrastructure needs of all the remaining districts of Tamilnadu.

Sub Project Activities

Civil Works and Equipments

?

??????????? Construction of Urban Health Posts, Health Sub Centres, upgradation of Primary Health Centres, minor civil works in the Primary Health Centres and Health Sub Centres at a cost of Rs.565.65 lakhs are nearing completion.? Maternity, paediatric care and operation theatre equipments have been supplied to Urban Health Posts, Primary Health Centres at a cost of? Rs.155.00 lakhs.? Vehicles have been supplied to the Primary Health Centres and district offices at Madurai and Theni at a cost of Rs.108 lakhs.

Health Management Information System?

??????????? Computers have been supplied to Primary Health Centres in Madurai and Theni District Offices and State Directorates at a cost of Rs.105 lakhs.? All the health functionaries will be trained in computer usage at a cost of Rs.10 lakhs

Information, Education and Communication

?

??????????? Community mobilisation through street plays was carried out in Theni District at a cost of Rs.24 lakhs.

?

??????????? Health Messages were broadcast through All India Radio at a cost of Rs.13.08 lakhs.

?

??????????? Emergency transport with wireless network for transport of obstetric emergencies and accident victims is being implemented with Non Governmental Organisation support in Theni District at a cost of Rs.6.5 lakhs.

National Component

?

  1. Major civil works have been carried out in the hospitals and Primary Health Centres at a cost of Rs.402.30 lakhs released as a first instalment by Government of India. The second instalment of Rs.343 lakhs will be released to districts soon to carryout the civil works in the Health Sub Centres and Primary Health Centres.
  2. Minor civil works at a cost of Rs.220 lakhs have been carried out in the Primary Health Centres and Health Sub Centres.
  3. Drug Kits worth Rs.800.00? lakhs have been procured for the Health Sub Centres? / Primary Health Centres? / First Referral Units? by Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation.? In addition Reproductive and Child Health Project care drugs have been supplied to Primary Health Centres and First Referral Units at a cost of Rs.125 lakhs.
  4. The services of private anaesthetists and obstetricians are being hired for providing emergency surgeries like caesareans and hysterectomies, tubectomies in the First Referral Units and tubectomy services in the Primary Health Centres.? RTI / STI clinics have been established in 70 Primary Health Centres and 3 staff nurses, drivers and cleaning staff have been recruited on contractual basis to provide round the clock delivery care.?

Training

?

??????????? Training activities have been planned for the medical and para-medical functionaries.? So far, Rs.693 lakhs have been spent for training.

?

??????????? Reproductive and Child Health Project awareness camps have been conducted in the Primary Health Centres of Thiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram and Perambalur Districts with a budget outlay of Rs.10 lakhs.

??????????? Outreach camps are being conducted in the villages of Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur and Thoothukudi districts at a cost of? Rs.15.84 lakhs.

NEW SCHEMES FOR 2003-2004

?

  1. Capacity Building of Adolescent girls to empower them as link persons in the community will be carried out at a cost of Rs.73 lakhs.

  1. Preventive Counselling of high risk families to eliminate the practise of female infanticide will be carried out with a budget outlay of Rs.5.68 lakhs.

  1. Information, Education and Communication convergence activities will be carried out by involving health and nutrition functionaries and community women groups at a cost of Rs.24.87 lakhs.

  1. The outreach services will be strengthened by organising village level camps at a cost of Rs.16.76 lakhs.
