SELECTION PROCESS
?

Selection to MBBS/Bachelor of Dental Surgery/ Bachelor of Science (Nursing) Bachelor of Physiotherapy//Bachelor of Occupational Therapy/Bachelor of Pharmacy courses is done under the single window system by the selection committee under the chairmanship of the Director of Medical Education in accordance with the policy of the Government announced every year.? Admission to post graduate diploma, degree, MDS and Higher specialties courses is done by the Selection Committee through a common entrance examination followed by counselling, adopting the rule of reservation.? Admission to diploma courses in nursing is also done by the selection committee on Merit basis (+2 marks) followed by counselling,? adopting the? rule of reservation.

THREE NEW MEDICAL COLLEGES
???????????
??? ??????? The Government have decided to start a new medical college at Theni.? The land for the proposed college has been located at Shanmughasundarampuram village at Andipatti Taluk measuring 19.27.0 hectares.? Construction of a 300 bedded hospital for the college with the HUDCO loan of Rs.12 crores is under progress.? The proposal for getting the approval of Government of India will be sent during August 2004.

??????????? The Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare have issued the Letter of Indent for starting a new medical college at Asaripallam at Kannyakumari District.? The State Government is taking all efforts to get the approval of Government of India for starting the new medical college at Vellore.

INCREASE OF M.B.B.S. SEATS IN FIVE MEDICAL COLLEGES
?
???????????? The Government have accorded sanction for the creation of an additional 315 seats in the MBBS Course.? The existing intake of M.B.B.S. seats is increased in five Government Medical Colleges at Kilpauk, Chengalpattu, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore and Salem.???? A sum of Rs. 1.00 crore has been released by the Government towards the purchase of equipment and furniture.? Regarding construction of additional buildings in the five Medical Colleges, HUDCO has sanctioned a loan of Rs. 10.00 crores. The Medical Council of India has inspected the facilities in all of the above five Medical Colleges. The Government of India have conveyed their approval for the increase of seats in MBBS course from 110 to 150 in Coimbatore Medical College, Coimbatore from the academic year 2004 - 2005. Approvals for the remaining Medical Colleges are awaited.

CANCER CONTROL PROGRAMME

MAMMOGRAPHY UNITS

??????????? During? the year 2003-04, Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, Coimbatore Medical College? Hospital and Thanjavur Medical College Hospital were provided with Mammography units (a vital equipment to detect the breast cancer at the beginning stage).? The equipments have already been installed and functioning.

MENTAL HEALTH? CARE

??????????? ?The Institute of Mental Health, Chennai? has been strengthened and the functional facilities improved.? A new administrative building at a cost of Rs. 1.50 crores has been sanctioned and construction is nearing completion.? The diet charges? for the patients at the above Institution have been increased from Rs. 9.64 to Rs. 13.70 per day per patient.? Three new De-addiction centres were sanctioned with the help of Government of India grant of Rs. 8.00 lakhs each.? At present, 8 De-addiction centres are functioning.

The King Institute of Preventive Medicine, Guindy is one of the premier Institutions of this country.? This Institute is manufacturing Vaccines and serum.?? It is also a teaching and research centre.?? The Virology Department of this Institute is recognised by the Government of India and the World Health Orgamisation as the National Polio Laboratory for South East Asia Region of the World Health Organisation. Two Scientists have been trained in Laboratory Diagnosis of Measles at the World Health Organisation Workshop in 2003.? Steps will be taken to achieve the target production of three million doses of Tetanus Toxoid Vaccine in the Year 2004-05.?

It is proposed to study various means for improving medical certification of death through the field practice centres of the Medical Colleges affiliated to the University.

???????? This Department serves as a National referral centre for quality assessment in H.I.V. testing.? Also serves as a Co-ordinator for NACO, Government of India, MTCT study in South India involving 5 centres, 3 in Chennai, 1 in Karnataka and 1 in Andhra Pradesh respectively.? Pregnant women visiting these hospitals for antenatal check up are offered counselling and H.I.V. testing.
