TAMILNADU HEALTH SYSTEMS PROJECT

?The World Bank funded Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project (TNHSP) aims to improve the effectiveness of the health care system, both public and private in the State, through
?
(i)?? increased access to and utilization of health services, particularly by poor, disadvantaged and tribal groups;
(ii)? development of effective interventions to address key health challenges including non-communicable ?????????????????????????diseases;
(iii)???????improved oversight and management of the health care system (both public and private); and
(iv)??????increased effectiveness of public sector hospital services.
?
The total outlay of this project is Rs 597.15 crores? and the project period is 5 years from 2005.?
?
Under this project the following activities are planned:
?
a)????? Strengthening the infrastructural facilities in 270 district and sub district hospitals in the State.
b)????? Improving referral linkages between primary, secondary and tertiary institutions.
c)????? Skill development and capacity building of health care providers.
d)????? Establishing comprehensive Health Management Information System.
e)????? Building Partnerships to make health care available in remote and inaccessible areas.
f)??????? Establishment of Health Care Waste Management System in all hospitals.
g)????? Tribal health improvement measures.
During Phase I, the secondary care facilities in Theni, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Pudukottai and Kanyakumari districts will be strengthened.

2.????????????? Supply of necessary equipments, hospital supplies for the 38 secondary hospitals in the Phase I districts.

3.????????????? Printing and supply of partograph cards to all hospitals.

4.????????????? Creating public awareness on health services and sensitization of hospital staff.
?
5.????????????? Purchase of 48 ambulances with equipment and cell phone facility for emergency ambulance transport services at the rate of one ambulance per block for 48 blocks in Phase I districts.

6.????????????? Purchase of 34 mortuary vehicles at the rate of one vehicle per health unit district, where such facility is not available.
?
7.????????????? Renovation of buildings including provision of equipments and furniture to 50 HSCs in tribal areas.
?
8.????????????? Purchase of 12 mobile vans equipped with laboratory equipments for provision of mobile outreach services in tribal areas.
?
9.????????????? Purchase of 25 generators for PHCs in tribal areas.
?
10.????????? Initiation of training in skill development of doctors and paramedical staff.
?
11.????????? Production of Information, Education and Communication materials for control of non-communicable diseases and road traffic accidents.
?
12.????????? Printing and supply of case sheets, OP tickets, registers, referral cards to all secondary level hospitals in the State.

13.????????? Developing, printing and supply of standard treatment protocols to the hospitals.
?
14.????????? Training for safe disposal of biomedical waste.
?
15.???????? Pilot projects for control of non-communicable diseases such as cardio vascular diseases including hypertension, diabetes mellitus and cancer cervix will be started in 4 districts.??
