ACUTE?? FLACCID? PARALYSIS (AFP)? SURVEILLANCE
-
As part of Polio eradication activities, AFP surveillance is an important tool to identify all Acute Flaccid Paralysis cases (AFP) in the age group of <15 years to isolate Polio virus if any and to confirm non - polio status on each AFP case.?
-
Whenever a child is suffering from fever followed by Acute Flaccid Paralysis, the child should be admitted to the nearest health facility ( reporting unit ).?
-
The health facility will collect stool specimen from the affected child and send the specimen to the King Institute laboratory, Chennai for virological analysis to confirm the diagnosis.?
-
On reporting of each AFP case, one additional dose of OPV is given to all under 5 years children in the affected village ( area ) as containment measure.
The systematic and sustained coverage of routine Immunisation and Pulse Polio Immunisation leads towards complete eradication of Poliomyelitis. In the year 2000? and so far? in 2001? there have been no cases of Polio. As against 130 cases in 1995. there have been no cases of Polio in the year 2000, 2001 and till date.
The incidence of other Vaccine Preventable Diseases is also on the decline
