Immunisation

• Immunisation against six vaccine Preventable diseases was started in 1978.

ACUTE?? FLACCID? PARALYSIS (AFP)? SURVEILLANCE

• As part of Polio eradication activities, AFP surveillance is an important tool to identify all Acute Flaccid Paralysis cases (AFP) in the age group of <15 years to isolate Polio virus if any and to confirm non - polio status on each AFP case.?

• Whenever a child is suffering from fever followed by Acute Flaccid Paralysis, the child should be admitted to the nearest health facility ( reporting unit ).?

• The health facility will collect stool specimen from the affected child and send the specimen to the King Institute laboratory, Chennai for virological analysis to confirm the diagnosis.?

• On reporting of each AFP case, one additional dose of OPV is given to all under 5 years children in the affected village ( area ) as containment measure.

The systematic and sustained coverage of routine Immunisation and Pulse Polio Immunisation leads towards complete eradication of Poliomyelitis. In the year 2000? and so far? in 2001? there have been no cases of Polio. As against 130 cases in 1995. there have been no cases of Polio in the year 2000, 2001 and till date.

The incidence of other Vaccine Preventable Diseases is also on the decline

Annually around 12 lakhs of pregnant women and 11.5 lakhs of infants are immunised.

• Immunisation is done on every Wednesday through the 8682 Health Sub-centers.
  
• Potency of the Vaccines is ensured through a well established Cold Chain System.
  
• 100% coverage is sustained every year.
  
• Pulse Polio Immunisation is organised every year from 1995-96. Each year Children under five years of age get 2doses of OPV and around 72 lakhs of children are covered for each dose.
