Selection and Admission Procedures for MBBS/BDS/PG Degree/PG Diploma/Higher Speciality and Paramedical Courses :
General Information :
Admission to Professional Courses MBBS, BDS, B.Pharmacy, B.Sc (Nursing) B.P.T & B.O.T in the Government colleges and self-financing colleges is done by the Selection committee functioning under the chairmanship of the Director of Medical Education. The office of the Selection Committee is situated in the Directorate of Medical Education, #162, Periyar E.V.R. High Road, Kilpauk, Chennai-600010.

Eligibility :
1. Nativity: Candidates who belong to Tamil Nadu only will be considered for admission to the medical, dental and para-medical courses.
2. Age Limit: Candidates should have completed 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission. (Example-For 2001-2002 session 17 years should have been completed on or before 31st December 2001).
3. Qualification: Candidates should have passed Higher Secondary Certificate (Academic) conducted by the Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary State Board with the following group of subjects with prescribed minimum marks alone shall be considered
a) Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology
or)
b) Physics, Chemistry, Biology with any other subject.
Note: Candidates who have passed any other equivalent examination with the same group of subjects mentioned above shall also be considered subject to the eligibility certificate from TamilNadu Dr.M.G.R.Medical University, Chennai.
Candidates who have already undergone or undergoing any of the Professional courses in Medical, Dental, Para Medical, Engineering, Law, Agriculture, Veterinary etc., for six months or more are not eligible to apply to the Medical, Dental and Para Medical courses.
4. All eligible candidates seeking admission to Medical, Dental & Para Medical courses in the Government and Self-financing colleges should have appeared in the Tamil Nadu
Professional Courses Entrance Examination (TNPCEE) conducted by the Anna University every year. However, candidates who have passed Diploma in Pharmacy seeking latent entry for B. Pharmacy are exempted from appearing for TNPCEE.
Candidates should apply directly to Anna University in the application form prescribed for TNPCEE. Notification regarding the same will be published in the newspapers by Anna University. (Usually applications will be available from beginning of March and examinations will be conducted during the 3rd /4th week of April).

Minimum Eligibility Marks:
Minimum eligibility marks in the various subjects (physics, chemistry, biology botany and zoology) for the different categories / Communities, namely Other communities (O.C), Backward class (B.C), Most Backward classes and Denotified communities (M.B.C/D.C) and Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (S.C/S.T). have been prescribed. Details will be available in the prospectus.

Categories of Seats :
CATEGORY I : The seats in the government medical, dental and para- medical colleges.
CATEGORY II : 50% of the seats are known as FREE SEATS in self-financing Medical , Dental and Para-Medical Colleges.
CATEGORY III : 35% of the seats are known as the Payment Seats in self-financing Medical, Dental and Para-Medical Colleges,
CATEGORY IV : 15% of the seats are known as NRI seats/ Management quota seats in the self-financing colleges.
All applications for admission against seats under the first three categories should be made in the printed application form prescribed by the Director of Medical Education and submitted to THE SECRETARY, SELECTION COMMITTEE. Usually the sale of applications would begin during the last week of May, the details of which will be notified in the newspapers.
For Category IV seats, candidates should apply directly to the management of the self-financing colleges/ institutions.

Method of Selection and Admission :
Selection for admission to government / self-financing medical institutions in Tamil Nadu for the Medical, Dental and Para-Medical courses will be made on the basis of marks obtained by the eligible candidates in the prescribed science subjects at the qualifying examination reduced to the base of 200 marks and the marks obtained for the maximum of 100 marks in the entrance examination (TNPCEE) conducted by the Anna University.

Ranking of the candidates will be done based on the totalmarks computed to a maximum of 300, as mentionedabove.

TheMERIT/RANK LIST will be published in the notice board of the office ofSelection Committee. Arrangements will be made to make the merit listavailable through internet and in all the government medicalcolleges.

Selection for admission to the seats under category I andCategory II under the respective courses will be made according tomerit, choice of the candidate, seats available and rule of reservation.For category III the rule of reservation will not befollowed.

Reservation for Rural School candidates: 15% of seats will be allotted to students who have studied both +1 and +2 (XI and XII Stds) in schools located in village Panchayat. This reservation will be done only within the reservation compartments (i.e., BC/MBC/SC/ST). This will be applicable for Medical, Dental and Para-Medical courses in government and self-financing colleges. The list of rural schools eligible for consideration will be published as an appendix along with the prospectus. Any unfilled seats in this category due to non availability of eligible candidates, would be carried over to the general pool under the same category. (Subjected to the final verdict in the S.L.P. filed in the Honble Supreme Court)

Counselling (Single Window System):
-
Selection and admission will be made on merit basis for allcategories of seats for Medical, Dental and Para-Medical courses,through counselling, following rule of reservation, choice ofcandidates and availability of seats. Eligible candidates will be calledfor counselling through call letters and also by publishing schedule inthe newspapers and also in the Internet. This single window system wasintroduced during 1999-2000 session.

According to this system the candidates are called forcounselling according to the rank based on the aggregate marks (for 300)obtained. Candidates can attend the counselling accompanied by oneparent /guardian.

Candidates have to furnish relevant details in a proformaand the original certificates are verified. The vacancy position andcolleges available are displayed. The candidates have four options forMBBS and three options for BDS. (for MBBS : Govt/IRT/Free/Payment, forBDS: Govt./Free/Payment).

Candidates can choose any of the course and college whereseats are available at their turn. If the seat is not available in thecourse of their choice they can opt to be wait listed. If the candidatechooses the BDS course (which is only available at his/her turn) ingovernment dental college, then the candidate can be waitlisted for MBBScourse in all categories of seats unless he/she is optingout.

Optiononce given at the time of counselling cannot be changed under anycircumstances. If a Candidate opts out of one category of seats and optsfor the other category, under no circumstance he can claim for opted outcategory.

Forexample, if a candidate opts out MBBS/BDS Seat in any of the Governmentmedical /dental colleges when seats are available and takes upfree/payment seats in a particular self financing colleges / IRT, thecandidate can not come back or claim seat in any Government medical /dental colleges at a later date and he/she will not be considered forvacancies if any arise at a later date in Government medical/dentalcolleges

From2000-2001 session a non-refundable amount is being collected from thecandidates selected during counselling. If the candidate does not jointhe course or fails to remit the balance amount of tuition fee on thedate stipulated by the Secretary, Selection Committee, at the respectivecolleges he/she, will have to forfeit the non refundable amount paidduring the counselling and the selection automatically standscancelled.

Cut-off Date: The cut-off dates fixed by the Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R. Medical University for admission is as follows:
Sliding movement will be done according to the vacancies arising after the first phase of counselling due to non-joining of the candidates. The cut-off date for the All India Quota students is 30th September of the year of admission. After this date the vacant seats are surrendered back to the State, which are added to general pool and candidates are allotted from the waiting list following the rule of reservation. The government also fix a cut-off date for the selection of candidates for MBBS/ BDS / PARA MEDICAL courses Admission will be made from the waiting list till the cut-off date prescribed by the Government.

The Candidates belonging to SC / ST Community are exempted from payment of the cost of application. Periyar High Road, Kilpauk, Chennai - 10 on or before the prescribed Date and Time. Candidates can apply for all the four Courses in single common application form. Candidates with D.Pharm Qualification should submit the application for Lateral Entry Scheme and they are exempted from writing the Entrance Examination.

Selection and admission for the above courses are also done by the Selection Committee. Out of the total number of Seats available for various PG Degree / Diploma Courses 25 % of seats are allotted for the All India Quota Candidates. Separate Entrance Examination is conducted usually in last week of January and candidates are allotted based on merit by the DGHS, New Delhi.

For the remaining 75% seats which are exclusively for Tamil Nadu State Candidates, Entrance Examination is conducted by the Selection Committee usually in last week of March or first week of April and a merit / rank list will be prepared. Candidates will be called for Counselling as per their rank in the merit list and allotted seats depending upon their Choice, availability of seats and rule of reservation. Option once given during counseling can not be changed under any circumstances.

50% of the seats in all specialties are reserved exclusively for service candidates of Tamil Nadu.
