> Department of Biological Control

• The Department was established in the year 1947 to analyse the quality of the vaccines manufactured at this Institute and to assist the State Drug Controller in analyzing the Schedule ?C? & C 1 drugs, under the Drugs & Cosmetics Act 1940 and rules there under.? It is only one of its kinds in the whole of Tamil Nadu.

• The Deputy Director of the Department is notified by the Tamil Nadu Government as Government Analyst to enable the issue of reports to the Drugs Controller. The Head of the Department is also called in, as expert witness, by the judiciary, in cases of contest by the Drug manufacturers.

• The drugs that come under this purview are all injectable drugs that require Biological, Microbiological, Chemical and Instrumental analysis.

• Attempts are now being made to reduce animal dependence and utilize more-in-vitro method. Analysis of the drugs is being done as per the Pharmacopoeial claim on the label.
